Understanding Your Audience

So, we’ve talked about how important it is for your audience to get to know you, but now you need to get to know them. 

To connect with your audience and grow your brand you need to understand who you are talking to. You will be able to tailor your marketing strategies to what they need and create long-lasting relationships with your audience which fosters trust and loyalty to you.

What do you need to know? 

Firstly, WHO ARE THEY?

Starting off with the basics, such as their age and what stage of life they are in. Are they students? Young families with kids? Single young adults? Older couples looking to retire? Or everyone in between? This all informs how they experience the world, especially interacting in the digital space. It also informs their spending habits and how they search for and receive information. 

WHERE ARE THEY?

Are you engaging with local, national, or international audiences? And while this is important, you also need to know where they live in online spaces.  

Are they professionals so you need to connect with them on LinkedIn, are they frequently posting in Facebook groups, or are they constantly surfing through Instagram Reels or on TikTok? In order to connect and engage audiences you need to understand how they best get their information in the world, what sources they go to and how they engage with content.

All this “background information” informs  

WHAT DO THEY WANT?

You can’t know this without first understanding where your audience is coming from. To see this, you can look at how they are engaging with businesses like yours and by monitoring feedback, comments and engagement with your posts. Also, if you reflect on what you’ve created so far and see what has been popular or had the most engagements that will advise what works and what doesn’t. 

Which means don’t be afraid to experiment with content as it can show you exactly what you need to be doing to engage with your audience. And don’t be afraid to ask! Do a Q&A, a survey, or ask them for feedback. Why not go straight to the source?

Finally, HOW ARE YOU GOING TO PROVIDE THIS FOR THEM?

With all this information you’ve gained you can shape your content and how it’s delivered for maximum engagement. Whether you need content that is delivered mainly online or in person, through statistics or a personal connection, or through written content or videos.
